Becoming A Big Sister

The Application Process

As an organization that works with children, we are required to screen all of our potential Big Sisters. The application process is designed to prepare our Big Sisters for their new role as a mentor and to ensure the safety of our Little Sisters. Mentoring is not for everyone, and this process will help you decide if mentoring is right for you.

Being a Big Sister is fun!  All that is needed is a few hours per week and willingness to enjoy some quality time with your "Little Sister", doing any activity you both like such as:

arts and crafts
rent a movie
go to the beach.

Volunteers are also required to have a car, insurance, good driving record, undergo criminal background check and commit a few hours 2-4x/month for a minimum 1 year commitment.

National research has also shown that having a mentor makes a big impact!  For example, children who had a mentor for 18 months or more were:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • one-third less likely to hit someone
  • getting along better with their families

You will also need

  1. Three written references from people you know stating how long they have known you, in what capacity and why you would make a good Big Sister

  2. A copy of your driving record ($5, can obtain by going to your local DMV)

  3. You must also be willing to undergo a criminal background check.  Information on where to obtain this will be provided.  The cost is generally under $20.

After this process is complete, we will match you with a Little Sister based on your location, age preference and interests.  Feel free to call or e-mail with questions about the application process.  An orientation and ongoing support is provided to ensure a great volunteering experience.
