The League Board of Directors created the Big and Little Sister Mentor Program in 1978. This program is designed as a preventive effort to help provide guidance to girls early enough to make a difference in their lives.
The Mentor program typically serves 150 to 176 women and girls annually, and is staffed by a program director and interns from local universities.

It’s just a special friendship with a consistency that is a blend of having fun, sharing new experiences and getting through life’s tough times together.

The Mentor Program Director and her staff are responsible for recruiting, training, matching, and monitoring the Big and Little Sisters. The Program also provides support to the adult mentors by advising them on their relationships with their Little Sisters. They also plan events and distribute tickets and coupons for activities that entertain and enrich the girls.

I often think that Krista mentors me more than I mentor her. It has been a very, very rewarding experience for me.

Big Sisters are volunteers who come to us from various ethnic and age groups, all walks of life, and every corner of San Diego County.
Become a mentor to a girl in your neighborhood. By dedicating just a few hours a week, you can have a positive impact in the life of one of the 40+ girls waiting for a Big Sister.

  • Little sisters are eligible between the ages of 6 and 17
  • Average length of time matched is 3 to 4 years
  • The Mentoring program generates no income; all support comes from donations & grants
With all the craziness in my life, I know I always have someone to talk to.  I can come to Julie with the best news or the worst and I know she’ll stand beside me.
