Activities 2005
Christmas Party - December, 2005
The Bikes for Kids Foundation finished off 2005 with a bang by providing 37 bicycles to the League - enough for every girl age 7 to 11 in the Big Sister League Mentoring program. Santa Claus gave each girl a beautiful, pastel-colored bike and a helmet, along with a handmade lap & bed blanket from the Linus Project. Big Sisters also provided "secret pal" gifts for every girl.
Halloween Party – October, 2005
A spooky good time was the theme at the Redwood Residence for our Halloween party. Big and Little Sisters came in costume, as well as the staff and residents from the 4th Avenue and Redwood Street Homes. Activities included a fortune teller, ghost stories, games, a musical “cake walk” along with lots of sweet treats and prizes.
Camping – October, 2005
The Mentor Program Annual Campout was held at Dos Picos Youth Group Area in Ramona. Thirteen Big and Little Sisters (six adults and seven girls) participated in a group walk with the forest ranger, a pottery class, arts and crafts and a sleepover. The UCSD Recreation/Outback Adventures group lent the League tents, sleeping bags and ground mats to make our stay a bit more comfortable. Roasting marshmallows for "smores" and telling ghost stories highlighted the sleepover. (Big Sisters, missing their mochas and lattes, made a Starbucks run in the morning!)
Women’s Surfing Contest – September, 2005
The World Famous Women's Surfing Contest was sponsored by World Famous Restaurant and the Star Surfing Company, both of Pacific Beach. The Big Sister League of San Diego, Inc. was the beneficiary, selling raffle tickets during the event. Jane Moyle, Mentor Program Director, donated back her grand prize, a surf board, netting the Big Sister League $525. An additional $200 in proceeds from raffle tickets went to the League.
Annual Big / Little Sister Picnic & Marien Kissling Retirement Celebration – August, 2005
The Annual Big and Little Sister Mentor Program Summer Picnic was held at Vacation Island near Sea World. It was also the celebration of the years of dedication (and the subsequent retirement) for our own Marien Kissling, Mentor Program Director. Carrie Elwood, a Big Sister and owner of a motivational corporate team-building business, organized a boat building contest with the Little Sisters. Good food, a hula-hoop contest, games, sunshine and the beach made this a memorable day.
